Getting started with MAW Live

MAW Live runs on a Windows PC at your facility. This guide takes you from nothing to a signed-in operator page. It takes about twenty minutes, plus the time to mount your cameras.

In this guide

  1. What you need
  2. On your own PC: install MAW Live
  3. The setup wizard
  4. The operator page at a glance
  5. Signing in, and staying safe
  6. Next steps

What you need

MAW Live runs on a Windows PC at your facility. Replay and recording keep working when the internet drops, and footage is kept on your PC. Clips with a tagged player also upload to that player's MAW account, unless you switch that off.

Each court includes 2 inputs, cameras or screen capture; the inputs of all your courts form one pool for your venue, used on any scene, and more inputs are an add-on. Court TVs are part of Broadcast: see Streaming and the court display.

MAW sells no hardware. Tell us about your courts at support@maw.gg and we size the PC, the cameras and the screens with you before you buy anything.

On your own PC: install MAW Live

  1. Sign in to the PC with a Windows account that has administrator rights.
  2. Run the MAW Live installer and follow its steps. It installs the runtimes MAW Live needs, MAW Live itself and the MAW Live Watchdog service.
  3. The installer makes a certificate for MAW Live and trusts it on that PC, so the connection to MAW Live is encrypted even on your own network.

The watchdog starts with Windows and restarts MAW Live if it ever stops. Your footage folders are never touched by installing, updating or uninstalling.

The installer adds a MAW Live shortcut to the desktop and the Start menu. It opens the operator page in its own window. On the PC itself the address is https://localhost:50053/; staff can also sign in from a browser on another computer, tablet or phone on your facility's network. If a browser ever says the connection is not private, do not click past it: email us.

The setup wizard

The first time MAW Live opens, a five-step wizard sets it up.

  1. License. Enter your license key, in the form XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX ("Show" reveals what you typed), and choose "Activate License". This step needs the internet.
  2. Admin Account. Your full name, a username and a password, twice, then "Create Account". A password must be at least 15 characters. There are no rules about capitals, digits or symbols, but common and leaked passwords, repeated characters and simple runs are refused, and your name, username and brand name do not count toward the 15.
  3. Your brand (optional). Your facility's name, up to 32 characters, shown as "<Brand> Live" in the operator page.
  4. Storage. The five folders MAW Live uses. The defaults suit most PCs; see Accounts, roles and retention.
  5. Done. Choose "Launch". You are already signed in.

The operator page at a glance

  • Top bar: your brand, the status badge (READY, DEGRADED or FAILURE), the license badge, your user menu and the Settings gear.
  • Left, "Inputs": your cameras, each with its "Live" and "Replay" buttons.
  • Center: the scene strip, one scene per court, with "New Scene" and the multi-scene grid button; under it the live preview, with overlays drawn on.
  • Right, "Outputs": recordings, streams and court displays, each with its own On and Off switch.
  • Bottom tabs: "Playback" (the replay controls), "Overlays" and "Audio".
  • Status bar: health, CPU, GPU, RAM, the replay buffer, storage, the watchdog, the license, "Clips" (the clip library) and "System".

Signing in, and staying safe

Everyone signs in with their own account; roles are enforced by MAW Live itself. You are signed out after 30 minutes idle (an admin changes this under "Idle Sign-Out"), and every sign-in ends after 8 hours.

To restart or shut down MAW Live, an admin uses Settings, "System Config", "Shut down or restart". After a shutdown, start it again from the Start menu with "Start MAW Live".

Safe mode. If MAW Live fails twice within two minutes, the watchdog stops starting it and says why, instead of looping. Failures in the first ten minutes after Windows starts do not count. When you have fixed the cause, choose Start, MAW Live, "Reset MAW Live safe mode" (Windows asks for administrator approval).
